It's funny. I came up with the name "Popcorn Picnic" several years ago, when I was regularly writing and drawing a comic strip about movies. I wrote down about a million words, then started combining them more or less at random. I can't remember any of the alternate possibilities—I imagine they were along the lines of, "cinecomics," "paper celluloid," "comic critiques," pretty lame stuff that was trying too hard to evoke the two biggest influences in my life: movies and comics.
Something about "Popcorn Picnic" smacked me right where I wanted it to. At the time I didn't know why, but I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. I liked the flavor of it, the snappy fun, everything! I remember sweating as I typed the URL into a domain registrar, certain it would be spoken for... but no! All mine! Today, as I struggle to decide what to include on this website (and more importantly, what to ditch), I think I understand what I liked so much. Although I ostensibly stumbled into the comics industry as a book designer for the now-defunct Kitchen Sink Press (a good story for another day), almost every job I've had before or since, big or small, has involved comics, television, film, cinema, acting... a real mess of various visual mediums, none more or less important, completely inextricable from each another. A literary, cinematic smorgasbord.
A popcorn picnic.
